Matični broj
The eight-digit number a company receives on entry into the APR register.
The matični broj is the primary identifier of every entity entered in the Business Registers Agency's registers — companies, cooperatives, associations, endowments, branches of foreign companies.
It does not change: not when the business name changes, nor the seat, nor the ownership. After a company is struck off it is not reissued to anyone else, which makes it a reliable way to recognise a company years later.
It carries leading zeros — “08721165” is not 8721165. About 14% of the register has a number starting with a zero, so storing it as a number is a common processing mistake.
